Always choose coach certification courses aligned with the International Coach Federation (ICF) guidelines. You can also choose courses accredited by other EMCC or CCE, as per your preference. However, to become a professional ICF Certified coach, ICF mentor coaching is mandatory. So, what is ICF mentor coaching?

What is ICF Mentor Coaching?

Mentor coaching is the coaching offered by experienced certified coaches, also involving receiving feedback. The feedback is derived through a positive and collaborative dialogue approach. To sum it up, Mentor Coaching is reviewing a recorded coaching session that helps to enhance the coaching skills.

What is the Purpose of ICF Mentoring?

ICF mentoring offers professional insight. It also aids in achieving and demonstrating the highest standards of ICF competencies and code of conduct. Above all, mentoring aims to align the coach’s capability with the ICF core competencies of coaching. Mentoring has proven to augment aspiring coaches’ ability, and is an essential eligibility criterion for coach credentialing.

Why Do You Need ICF Mentor Coaching?

Certification is just the first step towards one’s career as a professional coach. The final step is getting coaching credentials from ICF. For that, a coach must complete a minimum of 10 hours of mentor coaching within three months under a certified mentor coach. The sessions should be well documented to be sent along with the application for credentials.
A minimum of three of the ten mentoring hours must be one-on-one coaching with the mentor. Group or peer coaching may count for a maximum of seven hours toward the mentoring requirement.

When is ICF Mentoring required?

Certification for coaching comprises different levels and pathways. The standard certification credentials in ascending order are:

  1. ACC (Associate Certified Coach)
  2. PCC (Professional Certified Coach)
  3. MCC (Master Certified Coach)

Each certification program can be followed by applying for credentialing with varied criteria. However, mentor coaching is mandatory to apply for any ICF Credential. After completing the coach training, one has to get mentoring sessions under a certified mentor coach.

In this case, the credential of the mentor coach is accountable. In the case of mentoring ACC aspirants, the mentor coach should have ACC, PCC, or MCC certification. The aspirant coaches applying for PCC Credentialing should partner with a Mentor Coach holding a valid PCC or MCC Credential.
